The People of Iran have been thrown into mourning following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, according to Iranian Media Reports.

President Raisi died in a helicopter crash alongside the country’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, and other occupants on board the aircraft.

The Iranian President’s Helicopter crashed on Sunday in the country’s mountainous northwest, state news media reported on Monday. President Raisi’s death was announced from the podium of Iran’s most revered Shia shrine, the mausoleum of Imam Reza, in his hometown of Mashhad.

“Finding the location of the helicopter and seeing the scene there is no sign of any of the passengers being alive,” the head of Iran’s Red Crescent Society, Pirhossien Koulivand, who was at the site, told state television.

World leaders have sent in their tributes and condolences while also urging the people of Iran to remain calm.

“Had been anxiously following developments regarding the reported crash landing of President Raisi’s helicopter. I Was hoping for good news. Alas, this was not to be. I along with the government and people of Pakistan extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the Iranian nation on this terrible loss. May the martyred souls rest in heavenly peace. The great Iranian nation will overcome this tragedy with customary courage”, Shehbaz Sharif the Prime Minister of Pakistan said in a post on X, the social media platform.

Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India also sent in his condolences. Modi said he was deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic demise of Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. “His contribution to strengthening India-Iran bilateral relationship will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Iran. India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow” his post on X read.
