The Vice-Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Professor Timothy Adebayo, announced the arrest of 12 individuals in connection with the death of Akor Alex, a 22-year-old 200-Level Mechanical Engineering student.

The student was reportedly beaten to death by his colleagues over a phone theft incident last Friday.

Addressing journalists at the university’s Council Chamber on Monday, Prof. Adebayo  said the police had taken action in response to the incident, noting that 18 individuals were initially detained.

He said the number of persons arrested was subsequently reduced to 12 after screening. Among those arrested is a porter, who, along with the students, was taken to the Iyaganku Police Station in Ibadan.

Prof. Adebayo assured that the university has a zero-tolerance policy towards bullying and cultism.

He stressed, “We have learned our lessons in a hard way. There is no sign of cultism and bullying here. We always ask our students not to stay alone and in obscure places.”

To bolster security, the university plans to increase the number of security operatives and porters on campus.

“We will keep on beefing up security in our hostels and work on every other aspect of observed inadequacies,” he added.
