Doyin Okupe, a former stalwart of the Labour Party, has described the eventual winner of the 2023 eelction,  President Bola Tinubu, as the best of the candidates who ran.

Okupe spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today, on Friday.

Okupe, who also served as the campaign director for Peter Obi, said that looking back, Tinubu is the most suitable for the presidency.

“Of all the people that actually ran for President in 2023, by the benefit of hindsight, Bola Tinubu is the best,” Okupe said.

In the 2023 election, Tinubu emerged as the winner, with Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party coming in second and third, respectively.

He said, “I have seen Peter Obi, I have been with Atiku Abubakar, I also knew Bola Tinubu many years ago.

“I have not seen him in the last 7 to 8 years, that is not the point but he is the best in terms of capability, commitment, and knowledge.”

Okupe believes that Nigerians should give Tinubu time to prove himself, as one year is too short to judge his administration.

Okupe also addressed whether his comments were a betrayal to Obi, whom he campaigned for.

He disagreed, explaining that his support for Obi was based on their shared belief that a Southerner should be president.

This belief led them to leave the PDP and join the Labour Party.

Okupe had toured the country with Obi, seeking votes before the PDP primary.

When their efforts in the PDP didn’t succeed, they moved to the Labour Party, where Okupe became the director-general of Obi’s campaign.
