NSCDC Busts Illegal Mining Gang in Abia

Share

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has successfully uncovered an illegal mining operation spanning over 10 hectares of land in Aba, Abia State.

The raid, conducted as part of the NSCDC’s commitment to ending all forms of economic sabotage, resulted in the arrest of 12 suspects who are currently in custody.

Jamilu Aliyu, an official from the NSCDC Abia State Command, emphasized the significance of the operation in combating illicit activities that undermine the country’s economy.

“This is a testament to NSCDC’s commitment to ending all forms of economic sabotage in the country,” Aliyu stated.

“During this raid, we have successfully arrested 12 suspects who are in our custody. There is a massive caching spot where they steal the distilled crude to extract AGO, kerosene, and other petrol products.”

Aliyu highlighted the challenge of detecting such illegal activities, noting the dense forest cover that conceals the mining operation.

He credited the success of the operation to intelligence gathered from partner agencies and local communities.

“It’s usually from the tip-offs we get from them that we act to actually be able to get this done,” Aliyu added.

Usman Alfadarai, the Commandant of NSCDC in Abia State, underscored the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the community in combating criminal activities.

“Today, we are able to apprehend more than 12 persons who are equally involved in this nefarious activity,” Alfadarai remarked.

“These people shall be brought to book after due investigation, and we hope that they will be sentenced by the court.”

Alfadarai urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies to expose criminal elements and block loopholes that drain the country’s resources.

“I want to use this opportunity to call on all Abians to collaborate with all the agencies in the state to expose all criminal elements that are bent on depleting the very valuable resources of this country,” Alfadarai emphasized.

“At this time when the country is struggling with hyperinflation and workers are demanding higher pay, the least we can do is to assist the government in generating more resources by blocking all these loopholes.”
