The Kebbi State Police Command has detained Inspector Nura Ahmad following allegations that he fatally shot a 20-year-old man, Ahmed Ibrahim, along Zamare – Yauri road in Yauri Local Government Area.
SP Nafi’u Abubakar, spokesperson for the command, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to Abubakar, Inspector Nura Ahmad, attached to the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU), Base 18 Zamfara State, was on stop-and-search duty in Kebbi State when the tragic incident occurred.
“While on duty, he was confronted by Ahmed Ibrahim of Yauri town. As a result, the said Police Inspector shot Ahmad Ibrahim in his chest,” Abubakar stated.
The victim was rushed to General Hospital Yauri for treatment, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
The spokesperson added that Inspector Nura Ahmad had been arrested and is currently detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Birnin Kebbi.
“The command is conducting a discreet investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the conduct of the police inspector,” he added.
Expressing condolences to the family and friends of the late Ahmad Ibrahim, Abubakar assured the public of the command’s commitment to ensuring justice prevails in the investigation.
“We pray for his soul to rest in peace and for his family to find strength during this difficult time,” he said.
The victim’s brother, Mallam Jabir, a popular influencer, had taken to social media to express his grief and demand accountability.
In a moving post, he described Ahmed as a diligent and respectful individual who was dedicated to improving his life through hard work.
“This is Ahmed Ibrahim, he’s my blood brother. He was killed by a police officer yesterday in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State as a result of little disagreement (money related issues),” Mallam Jabir tweeted, accompanied by emotive crying emojis.
The incident drew widespread condemnation and calls for justice across social media platforms with some of the posters tagging the police, @PoliceNG, human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore @YeleSowore, and others.
“This is Ahmed Ibrahim, the blood brother of @Mallam_jabeer. Mallam Jabeer is a strong supporter of the Obidient movement, fighting against oppression and for a better Nigeria that gives hope,” Omotayo Williams tweeted, lamenting the tragic loss.
“We cannot allow this to be swept under the carpet,” the tweet urged, urging massive retweets to amplify the demand for justice.
The posters created a hashtag #JusticeForAhmedIbrahim to call attention to the incident and demand justice.
