The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall and potential flash floods in multiple states across Nigeria.
This weather phenomenon is attributed to the Madden-Julian Oscillation, forecasted to exert strong influence over West Africa in the upcoming week.
NiMET’s advisory identifies thirteen states where heavy rain and flash floods are anticipated.
According to the agency, these states include Niger, Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, Taraba, Delta, Imo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Ekiti, and Osun.
In addition, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Zamfara, Kano, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Anambra states.
NiMET, in a statement, emphasised the urgency of taking precautionary measures, especially in low-lying areas and flood-prone regions.
It says, “The public should be vigilant and take necessary safety precautions.
“Avoid walking through fast-flowing runoff waters to prevent accidents and ensure personal safety during this period.”
