NiMET has issued a weather advisory predicting heavy rainfall in multiple states across Nigeria due to the Madden-Julian Oscillation, which is expected to be particularly strong in the coming week over West Africa. The affected states where heavy rain and potential flash floods are anticipated include:
- Niger
- Plateau
- Benue
- Kaduna
- Taraba
- Delta
- Imo
- Cross River
- Akwa Ibom
- Rivers
- Bayelsa
- Ekiti
- Osun
Additionally, NIMET says moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over parts of the following states:
- Zamfara
- Kano
- Borno
- Gombe
- Adamawa
- Kogi
- Kwara
- Nasarawa
- Ogun
- Oyo
- Ondo
- Lagos
- Edo
- Enugu
- Ebonyi
- Anambra
NIMET advised the public to take necessary precautions, especially in low-lying areas and flood-prone regions, to prevent disruption to vehicular traffic and other potential hazards associated with heavy rainfall and flash floods.
The agency also recommended that Nigerians should avoid walking through fast-flowing runoff waters for safety reasons.
