The Edo State Police Command has made a breakthrough in the case involving the tragic killing of Glory Adekolure, a recent graduate from the University of Benin’s Chemistry department.
The police confirmed the arrest of a suspect, Happy Gordon, during an Edo Broadcasting Service report monitored by Meteor. The suspect, a male, was seen answering questions in the report.
Earlier on Friday, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, had disclosed the arrest of the suspect to Channels TV but promised to give fuller details later.
Adekolure’s lifeless body was found near her family home in Iyowa Community, Benin City, on June 15, 2024.
Her brother, who goes by the Twitter handle @softbaba24, had passionately called for justice, appealing to Nigerians to assist in uncovering the truth surrounding his sister’s untimely death.
Earlier, Meteor had reported the murder and the plea of the lady’s heartbroken brother for support and justice.
The suspect allegedly attacked Adekolure as she made her way home near Oluku in Benin City on June 15.
Gordon allegedly assaulted her, stole her mobile phones and money, and fatally injured her before fleeing.
Gordon, originally from Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, reportedly fled to Ibuzo, Delta State, where he hid after the crime.
The suspect described how he traced the victim till they got to a secluded spot When he was asked if he had killed other women, he answered in the affirmative.
One of the interrogators then threw a question at him, “How may girls have you killed?”
“I have killed four,” he responded.
Residents discovered Adekolure’s body and alerted the police, leading to an investigation that revealed the young graduate lived in the area and was attacked close to her home.
A devastated @softbaba24 had recounted the heartbreaking events on social media, urging for justice for his sister.
He posted, “Justice for my younger sister Adekolure Idowu Glory, who was murdered in Iyowa Community, Benin, Edo State on her way back from UNIBEN.
“Her body was found near our mother’s house on June 15, 2024, with the assistance of the Nigerian police from Ekiadolor division. She was assaulted and killed. Please Nigerians, come to my rescue. My mum can’t bear this.”
The tragic loss sparked widespread sympathy and outrage on social media, with users demanding swift action from authorities to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators. @softbaba24 continues to seek public support in the investigation to ensure justice for Adekolure’s memory.
