Nigerians Cheer Police After Foiled Kidnapping At Popular Lagos Spare Parts Market

Nigerians in Lagos and on social media commended the police on Friday after news emerged of a foiled kidnapping in one of the busiest areas of Lagos.

On social media, users left comments praising the police after a video circulated showing some policemen in the aftermath of the gun duel.

A viral video on social media also shows an appreciative crowd of onlookers praising and applauding policemen on a moving police vehicle.

One of the onlookers is heard screaming, “Nigeria police is the best. Won mu won ba le (They gunned them down).

Residents of the area had earlier reported hearing heavy gunshots on Oloje Street, on Thursday night around 9pm.

Meteor Nigeria reports a statement issued by the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Friday, with details of the gunfight that erupted when the police confronted the kidnappers.

The state police commissioner, Adegoke Fayoade, also shared details of the police operations at a media briefing at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja, on Friday,  said the police acted on intelligence received weeks ago.

The commissioner said they obtained highly reliable intelligence about a notorious kidnapper gang in Lagos planning to abduct wealthy individuals.

The statement says, “Upon receipt of this intelligence about two weeks ago, CP Fayoade directed the Command’s tactical teams to commence work on it. They followed up closely, monitored dutifully and were able to determine that the gang was going to strike yesterday in the Ladipo area of Lagos State.

“With the benefit of this information, we were able to proactively prepare for them and more or less laid an ambush for them.”

“They would not give up easily as they engaged the police officers in a shoot-out. They of course bowed to the superior firepower of the police.

“Nine of them were neutralized while two escaped with gunshot injuries. Four AK-47 rifles, four locally-made semiautomatic pistols, nine AK47 magazines, three walkie-talkies, one POS machine and a loudspeaker were recovered from them.

“Also recovered are their two operational vehicles: one black Toyota 4Runner and a blue Lexus RX350. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects.”

The police said the gang, which it had trailed for months, was responsible for a spate of kidnapping of wealthy individuals in the Isolo, Okota, Ejigbo, and Ladipo areas of the state.

On social media, Nigerians reacted positively to the news praising the police for its swift action and hoping that it would deter kidnappers from shifting their focus to Nigeria’s commercial capital.
