As the nationwide hunger protests, dubbed #EndBadGovernance, continue into their second day, prominent human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN) has called for an immediate suspension of the demonstrations.

In a statement released on Friday, Adegboruwa, who is also the lawyer to the Take It Back Movement, one of the protest organisers, expressed concern over the escalating violence and losses that have occurred since the protests began.

He emphasised that the original goals of the demonstrations are being overshadowed by the destructive actions of individuals who have hijacked the movement.

“I appeal to the protesters to withdraw themselves from their various protest grounds and to suspend the protests immediately and indefinitely,” Adegboruwa urged.

“This will allow for meaningful dialogue and engagement with the federal government.”

Adegboruwa highlighted the tragic developments, noting that the protests have led to significant losses and casualties, which were never intended.

He condemned the violence and called for an end to the unrest, stressing the need for a peaceful resolution.

The lawyer also extended his condolences to the families of security personnel who have been affected by the violence, as well as to the protesters who have suffered losses.

He expressed hope for comfort and strength for those impacted by the situation.

Furthermore, Adegboruwa called on President Bola Tinubu to address the nation directly and engage with protest representatives to facilitate a constructive dialogue.

Adegboruwa had previously contacted the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on July 26, 2024, requesting police protection for the protesters.

His recent statement reflects a shift from seeking protection to advocating for the suspension of the demonstrations in light of the growing violence and disruption.

The ‘EndBadGovernance’ protests, which began on August 1, have been driven by widespread discontent over economic hardship and government policies.

However, Adegboruwa’s call highlights growing concerns over the direction of the protests and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to avoid further escalation.

On Thursday, Adegboruwa highlighted the strength of unity among Nigerians, emphasizing that collective action can overcome even the toughest challenges, including suppression, threats, intimidation, and harassment from the government and security agencies.
