The family of the late iconic Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu has confirmed that her remains will be interred before the end of August.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during a condolence visit from the Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) at Onwenu’s residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Onwenu, a revered figure in the Nigerian music industry, passed away unexpectedly last Tuesday after performing at the 80th birthday celebration of Chief Stella Okoli, the founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
Her sudden death has been met with widespread mourning from fans and colleagues alike.
During the visit, Orits Wiliki, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of MCSN, led the delegation to offer their condolences.
Onwenu’s sons, Abram and Tjiani, shared their plans to honour their late mother’s wishes by ensuring her remains are laid to rest in accordance with her desires.
Although a specific burial date has not yet been announced, the family assured that the ceremony will take place before the month concludes.
The family has promised to release further details about the burial arrangements in the coming days.
In the meantime, the outpouring of tributes continues.
Musician King Sunny Ade, flutist Tee Mac, and Kenny Ogugbe, among others, visited Onwenu’s home to sign the condolence register.
King Sunny Ade, visibly emotional, wrote a heartfelt message: “Dear sister and colleague, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Your fans and friends all over the world will remember you forever.”
Tee Mac has committed to performing at Onwenu’s service of songs, while Mayo Ayilaran, General Manager of MCSN, and other notable figures are expected to participate in honouring the late singer’s memory
