The Kaduna State Government has announced a significant reduction in the curfew hours imposed on its citizens.
The curfew, which had been in place around the clock since August 4, 2024, will now be in effect from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. starting Thursday, August 8, 2024.
Samuel Aruwan, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, made the announcement late Wednesday night.
He explained that the adjustment in curfew hours reflects the progress made in enhancing security conditions across Kaduna and its neighboring Zaria town.
“The Governor Uba Sani-led Security Council made the decision to relax the curfew after assessing the recent improvements in security within Kaduna and Zaria towns and their surrounding areas,” Aruwan stated.
“This change aims to offer some relief to our citizens while maintaining the necessary measures to ensure their safety.”
Beginning on August 1, the #EndBadGovernance protests emerged from widespread discontent over economic conditions and government policies.
With thousands taking to the streets, demonstrators are demanding urgent government intervention to address the soaring cost of living and other socio-economic issues.
Several violent incidents, including deaths and looting, have marred the protests, intensifying the tense situation and prompting calls for an end to the protests.
While the Northern parts of the country have been rocked by the incidents of violence and arson, the South East and South West have largely experienced peaceful rallies.
The comprehensive curfew was initially put in place to curb the unrest and restore order.
However, as security forces have managed to regain control and stabilize the situation, the government decided it was prudent to ease these restrictions.
Under the new curfew arrangement, residents will have a window of freedom from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, allowing them to carry out daily activities, conduct business, and attend to personal matters during daylight hours.
Despite the relaxation of the curfew, authorities have emphasized that security forces will remain vigilant.
“Security forces will continue to enforce the curfew during the restricted hours and take decisive action against any actions that may lead to a breakdown of law and order,” Aruwan added. underscores the government’s commitment to preventing any resurgence of violence or disorder.
Governor Sani also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and security.
“The State Security Council is dedicated to preserving peace in Kaduna State. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and take all necessary steps to safeguard our citizens,” Governor Sani said in a statement.
