Security operatives suspected to be from the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday, August 7, 2024. The raid, which occurred after regular office hours, has intensified the ongoing controversy surrounding the recent #EndBadGovernance protests that have swept across Nigeria.
According to reports, the security forces arrived at the NLC headquarters in the capital city of Abuja around 10 p.m., catching most staff off guard. The operatives, who were described as masked and armed with rifles, initially targeted the 10th floor, which houses the office of NLC President Joe Ajaero. They then proceeded to the second floor, where other NLC offices are located.
A private security guard on duty at the time confirmed the operation, stating, “Masked operatives arrived late at night, and their first target was the 10th floor where the president’s office is located. They moved to the second floor shortly after, causing significant disruption.”
The NLC confirmed the raid through a statement posted on its X (formerly Twitter) account. The statement described the situation as a breach, saying, “Armed security personnel, both in uniform and plain clothes, invaded the Labour House in large numbers. They specifically targeted the 10th and 2nd floors, breaking into the latter and ransacking the bookshop. They claimed that materials found were used to incite and organize the recent protests.”
The raid comes amidst allegations that organized labour, including the NLC, has been implicated in sponsoring the recent #EndBadGovernance protests, which began on August 1, 2024. The demonstrations, initially sparked by rising living costs, have escalated into larger-scale protests calling for regime change, with Russian flags reportedly being flown in some areas.
The protests have garnered significant attention and led to a heightened response from the government. President Bola Tinubu, concerned about the impact on national stability and democracy, has summoned security chiefs to address the crisis. This led to a directive for a crackdown on individuals and organizations suspected of inciting unrest.
Following the President’s order, the DSS and other security agencies have conducted a series of raids and arrests.
The NLC denounced the raid as an infringement on their operations and freedom. The organization called for a thorough investigation into the actions of the security forces and has vowed to continue advocating for workers’ rights and social justice.
Beginning on August 1, the #EndBadGovernance protests emerged from widespread discontent over economic conditions and government policies.
With thousands taking to the streets, demonstrators are demanding urgent government intervention to address the soaring cost of living and other socio-economic issues.
Several violent incidents, including deaths and looting, have marred the protests, intensifying the tense situation and prompting calls for an end to the protests.
While the Northern parts of the country have been rocked by the incidents of violence and arson, the South East and South West have largely experienced peaceful rallies
