The Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has achieved an unprecedented milestone, receiving the highest number of student loan applications within a single 24-hour period since the launch of its application portal.
On Wednesday, 2024, NELFUND reported an extraordinary influx of applications, with a total of 9,687 student registrations recorded in just one day. Of these, 7,975 were completed loan applications, setting a new record since the portal’s opening on May 25, 2024.
Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director and CEO of NELFUND, expressed his enthusiasm about this unprecedented surge. “This record number of applications highlights the critical role that NELFUND plays in providing access to higher education for students grappling with financial difficulties,” Sawyerr stated. “It is a clear indication of the pressing need for financial support among Nigerian students.”
The sharp increase in loan applications reflects a broader issue of financial constraints affecting many students pursuing tertiary education. With the rising costs associated with higher education, many students are turning to NELFUND as a vital resource for financial assistance.
NELFUND was established to address these financial challenges, aligning with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support educational advancement across the country. Since its inception, the fund has seen a steady stream of applications, demonstrating the ongoing demand for financial aid.
