Nigerian music legend King Sunny Ade (KSA) has recently shed light on the long-standing speculation surrounding his relationship with the late Onyeka Onwenu.
During a condolence visit to Onwenu’s family, KSA clarified that the rumors about their romantic involvement were part of a strategic marketing plan for their hit song “Wait for Me.”
In his remarks, KSA explained that the speculation was intentionally created to promote the song.
“That was a gimmick we did. It was for the music. We wanted to launch ‘Wait for Me.’ Before, people used to think she was my girlfriend. Me and her have never said yes or no,” KSA revealed.
The rumors about a possible affair between KSA and Onwenu have intrigued fans for years.
However, KSA’s recent comments have put these speculations to rest, revealing the marketing strategy behind the rumuors.
Onwenu, who passed away on July 30, 2024, was celebrated not just for her musical talent but also for her guidance and support.
KSA fondly recalled Onwenu’s wisdom and generosity. “She’s someone who would sit down with you and say, ‘Can I chip in for some advice?’ And the advice was always excellent,” he said.
KSA’s tribute to Onwenu also highlighted the deep respect and admiration he held for her.
He described Onwenu as an extraordinary woman who was deeply committed to their music and their shared vision.
“She’s the first person to say this thing, we must do it. Sunny, let’s do it. This is what we want to do. It’s not only for us. It’s not only for our nation, but for the whole world,” he stated.
Their collaboration on “Wait for Me” was a significant part of both artists’ careers. KSA noted that Onwenu often took the lead in their joint projects, bringing her own ideas and creativity to their work.
“When it comes to music that the two people have to do together, she used to do more. She would just tell me, Sunny, let’s take it this way. And it’s always good,” he recalled.
KSA expressed his intention to honor Onwenu by continuing to perform “Wait for Me” and always crediting her as the song’s true owner.
“I will, on her behalf, sing it throughout my life with any artist that you want me to. I’ve done it several times in different countries. I mentioned her name. I said she’s the owner of the song,” he said.
