The Nigerian gospel music community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Aduke Ajayi, known to many as Aduke Gold, whose vibrant voice and inspiring story touched countless lives. Her death was announced on Tuesday by fellow gospel artist Esther Igbekele, who shared the devastating news on social media, calling Aduke Gold “a general” and expressing her profound sorrow: “A general has fallen. RIP.”

This loss comes just months after the passing of another beloved gospel singer, Egbin Orun, on April 28, 2024. Both artists were close to Igbekele, and the community is reeling from the grief of losing two remarkable talents in such a short span.

Aduke Gold had a special place in the hearts of many, not just for her music but for her life story, which resonated deeply with her audience. Her breakthrough single, “Nitori Ogo” (“Because of Glory”), was more than a song; it was an anthem of perseverance and faith, reflecting her journey from humble beginnings to rising stardom. This track, part of her popular eight-track album, went viral, solidifying her as a rising star in the gospel music industry.

Her life was not without challenges. Orphaned at the age of four, Aduke Gold faced immense hardships growing up. She often spoke openly about her struggles, recounting how she sold slippers, yam, and fried fish to survive. She also worked at a frozen foods store, packing fish heads, and learned to cook with firewood during times when kerosene was scarce. These experiences, coupled with her battle against severe vertigo, shaped the resilience that defined both her life and her music.

Despite these obstacles, Aduke Gold’s determination never wavered. Her success was a testament to her strength, as she transformed her adversities into powerful messages of hope that resonated with many. Her education also played a crucial role in her life. Thanks to a scholarship from Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele, who was the Commissioner for Youths and Sports in Lagos State at the time, Aduke Gold earned a degree in History and International Relations from Lagos State University.

Her passion extended beyond music, particularly in her work with children with special needs. Aduke Gold was deeply committed to helping children with autism, cerebral palsy, and dyslexia, using her education and personal experiences to make a meaningful impact on their lives.

Aduke Gold’s journey in music began under the stage name Aduke Penkele, performing as a child artiste. It was her mentor, the renowned gospel singer Tope Alabi, who advised her to adopt the name Aduke Gold—a name that would later become synonymous with inspiration and spiritual upliftment.

Throughout her career, Aduke Gold drew inspiration from a wide array of mentors and influential figures. She often mentioned gospel legends like D.A Fasoyin, The Ayo ni C&S Choir, and Tope Alabi, alongside secular icons such as King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey, as key influences on her music.
