Google Unveils First AI-Powered Android Update, New Pixel 9 Phones

Share

Google took a major step into the future, on Tuesday, with the launch of its first AI-powered Android update and a new line of Pixel 9 smartphones.

These updates signal a new chapter for Google’s AI technology, bringing more sophisticated and human-like interactions to its devices.

With the new Android update, Google introduces the Gemini AI assistant, a major leap forward in making digital assistants feel more intuitive and responsive.

Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem, described the new experience: “We’ve completely rebuilt the assistant experience with Gemini, so you can speak to it naturally the way you would with another person.”

This means Gemini can now handle complex tasks, follow conversations, and provide help right when you need it.

With Gemini, you can simply ask if you’re free at that time, and it will check your calendar and even remind you to buy tickets later. It can also draft emails with personalised images or assist with information from Google apps, like creating a workout plan based on your trainer’s email.

In tandem with this update, Google rolled out the Pixel 9 series, featuring the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

These new phones come packed with the latest Tensor G4 processor and up to 16GB of RAM, making them ready to handle AI tasks smoothly. Prices start at $799 for the Pixel 9, climbing to $1,799 for the high-end Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

The new models boast brighter screens and improved cameras, enhancing the overall user experience.

Google also introduced the Pixel Watch 3, which now comes with a larger display, advanced fitness tracking, and deeper integration with Google’s ecosystem.

This includes features like connecting with Nest cameras and controlling Google TV. A new “Loss of Pulse” function on the watch uses AI to detect if a user’s heart has stopped and can notify emergency services if needed, available in certain regions.

This early announcement places Google ahead of Apple, which is set to launch its own AI features later this year. Google’s strategy to introduce these innovations ahead of its rival aims to capture the spotlight and showcase its advancements in AI technology.

Despite these exciting updates, Google continues to face stiff competition in the smartphone market, where it holds less than 1% of the global market share.

The new Pixel 9 series and AI features represent a strategic push to enhance Google’s appeal and strengthen its position among tech enthusiasts.

Additionally, Google has partnered with Peloton to offer Fitbit Premium users access to Peloton’s workout classes, further integrating its technology into daily life.
