Former Nigerian international goalkeeper, Idah Peterside, recently opened up about the difficult times he faced after retiring from football. The ex-Super Eagles shared a deeply personal story about his struggles after his wife left him.
Peterside’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable. He retired from football in 2002 after a successful career, playing for teams such as the BBC Lions and Enyimba FC in Nigeria, as well as Tembisa Classic FC and Moroka Swallows in South Africa. He was also the first Nigerian football pundit on DSTV, where he continued to engage with the sport he loved.
After hanging up his boots, Peterside transitioned to a new career as a television pundit with SuperSport and started a church, devoting his time to evangelism. However, it was during this significant period of change in his life that his first wife left him. This event plunged him into a deep emotional turmoil, leading him to contemplate taking his own life.
In a heartfelt post on X.com, Peterside wrote, “I almost killed myself after my ex-wife left me, the shame was too much. I had just started a church and was just starting on SuperSport. Only God saw me through. I look back today and am very grateful to God.”
Peterside, who is now the pastor of Christ Ambassadors Church in South Africa, found solace and strength in his faith during this challenging time. His journey of faith began in 1996 while he was still playing for Iwuanyanwu Nationale. That same year, he attended the Word of Faith Bible College, where he earned a diploma while continuing his football career.
Despite the challenges he faced, Peterside’s story is one of resilience and hope. His openness about his struggles has resonated with many, inspiring those who may be going through similar challenges. His story has received widespread support on social media, with many praising his courage and faith.
One user, Stanzee, wrote, “Keep breaking down barriers, Bro. It is well with you.” Another user, Iyke Any, commented, “Wow! Thank you for sharing this. You’re actually inspiring someone going through a similar challenge right now with this post.” Many others echoed these sentiments, thanking Peterside for his honesty and sharing their own stories of overcoming difficult times.
