Tragedy struck at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Thursday when a final-year student was killed by a reckless driver near the campus gate.
The victim, identified as Esu Rita Ema, was a student of the Department of Foreign Languages and was reportedly at the university to submit her final-year project when the fatal accident occurred.
According to a statement released by the university’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, the tragic incident took place at the Ife-Ibadan Expressway axis, just as Rita was attempting to cross the road to enter the campus.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was speeding and failed to stop in time, leading to the fatal collision.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) quickly responded to the scene. They recovered Rita’s body and transported it to the mortuary at the OAU Teaching Hospital.
Meanwhile, the driver responsible for the accident was apprehended by the Nigerian Police, who have since launched an investigation into the incident.
The news of Rita’s death has sent shockwaves through the OAU community, where she was well-regarded as a bright and promising student.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Adebayo Bamire, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. In a heartfelt message delivered through the Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Adeolu Odedire, the Vice-Chancellor extended his condolences to Rita’s family.
“It is very sad to lose a domestic animal; how can anyone quantify the loss of a child?” Professor Bamire lamented.
“The incident is particularly galling as the victim is a young, promising adult with a lot of potential—a final year student for that matter.”
The Vice-Chancellor urged Rita’s parents, siblings, family, friends, and classmates to find solace in God during this difficult time, praying for the strength to bear the loss.
Friends and classmates described Rita as a dedicated student who was eager to make a positive impact in her field. “She was always focused and determined to succeed,” one of her classmates remarked.
“We were all looking forward to graduating together, but now this is what we have to deal with.”
The incident has brought attention to the broader issue of road safety around the university campus, particularly along the Ife-Ibadan Expressway.
Students and staff have long expressed concerns about the dangers posed by reckless driving in the area, which is frequented by both pedestrians and vehicles.
The road, which serves as a major artery for traffic in the region, has seen numerous accidents in the past, some of which have been fatal.
In response to the growing outcry, the university has vowed to work with relevant authorities to enhance road safety in the area.
Bamire acknowledged the concerns of the students and staff, stating that the safety of the university community is a top priority.
“We will not rest until we ensure that our students can move around safely,” he said. “This is a tragic reminder of the need for vigilance and action.”
