NiMet Predicts Three Days of Thunderstorms, Rain Till Tuesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting thunderstorms and rain across Nigeria from Sunday, August 25, to Tuesday, August 27, 2024.

The forecast, issued on the agency’s X.com account on Saturday, covers various regions of the country, including northern and central areas, with potential impacts on daily activities and travel.

According to the forecast, the northern region will experience significant weather changes over the next three days. On Sunday morning, thunderstorms are expected in parts of Borno, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Gombe States.

The thunderstorms will continue into the afternoon and evening, affecting most of the northern region.

“In the North Central region, thunderstorms with rain are predicted for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau States during the morning hours,” NiMet stated.

“Later in the day, these thunderstorms will cover the entire region. Southern cities will experience cloudy skies in the morning, with intermittent rain expected throughout the day.”

On Monday, thunderstorms are anticipated in Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa, Yobe, and Jigawa States in the morning. The northern region will see thunderstorms later in the day.

The North Central region, including the FCT, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara States, will experience morning thunderstorms with rain. Thunderstorms are expected to continue in the afternoon over parts of the FCT, Plateau, and Niger States, with cloudy skies over the southern states.

On Tuesday, thunderstorms are expected over Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna States in the northern region during the morning. The entire region is expected to have cloudy skies later in the day. The North Central region will see thunderstorms with rain in Niger and Kwara States during the morning.

Thunderstorms with rain will also occur in Kogi, the FCT, and Benue States during the afternoon and evening. The southern region will experience intermittent rain throughout the day.

NiMet advised residents to be cautious due to the high likelihood of urban flooding in major cities caused by heavy rains. Flood-prone areas should be avoided, and strong winds may accompany the thunderstorms.

The agency recommends that the public stay updated with weather information and follow safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.

NiMet’s General Manager for Weather Forecasting, Dr. Lami Danladi, emphasised the importance of staying informed: “We urge everyone to be vigilant and plan their activities around the weather forecasts. Flooding and strong winds can pose significant risks, so it is crucial to stay updated with the latest information from NiMet.”

For travelers, NiMet advises checking weather conditions before heading out and considering alternate routes to avoid potential disruptions.
