In a recent interview on the ’90s Baby podcast, Afrobeats artist and producer Maleek Berry revealed a surprising side of superstar Davido that few were aware of. Berry shared intriguing stories about their early collaboration and how Davido’s true background was not initially apparent.
Maleek Berry, known for his work in the Afrobeats genre, recounted how he first met Davido through social media. At the time, Davido was not the global icon he is today. His music career was just starting, and his YouTube channel had a modest 4,000 views.
Berry explained, “I was there when Davido only had four thousand YouTube views. When he came to London, I would take him to the studio in Bermondsey and record him.”
The two connected over their shared love for music and began working together in a London studio. Despite Davido’s humble attitude and persona, Berry was stunned when he visited Davido’s father’s home for the first time.
“I was just so taken aback because at the time, my mind didn’t used to move like he [Davido] had money. He used to blend in with us. When I saw the tower, I was like, okay, they’re rich,” Berry said, referring to the impressive and luxurious mansion owned by Davido’s family.
Davido’s family background was something Berry had not initially considered. Davido, who is known for his down-to-earth personality, seemed to blend in with the regular crowd rather than flaunting his wealth. It was only when Berry visited Davido’s father’s mansion that he realized the extent of their affluence.
“There’s money and there’s money!” Berry exclaimed. He was genuinely surprised by the level of wealth his friend’s family possessed, which was far beyond what he had imagined.
This revelation highlights a side of Davido that contrasts with his public image. While Davido has always been known for his music and philanthropy, Berry’s account sheds light on his humility and the contrast between his public persona and private life.
In addition to their early musical collaboration, Berry credited Davido with introducing him to another major Afrobeats star, Wizkid. Berry noted, “Davido introduced me to Wizkid years later. It’s amazing how our early friendship and collaboration opened doors to other significant relationships in the music industry.”
