The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has named Bruno Labbadia as the new Head Coach of the country’s senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles.
The announcement was made early Tuesday morning.
Ademola Olajire, NFF’s Director of Communications, shared the news on social media, stating, “The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee to appoint Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The appointment is with immediate effect.”
Bruno Labbadia, 58, is a German coach with extensive experience. Born in Darmstadt, Germany, Labbadia had a successful playing career with clubs like Bayern Munich and Hamburger SV.
Labbadia, a seasoned football manager from Germany, has been chosen to lead Nigeria’s senior men’s national team.
The 58-year-old Labbadia was born in Darmstadt, Germany, on February 8, 1966. His career spans both playing and coaching roles, making him a notable figure in the football world.
Labbadia’s playing career included stints at several prestigious clubs, including Bayern Munich, where he won the German Bundesliga title in 1994.
His other teams included Darmstadt 98, Hamburger SV, FC Kaiserslautern, FC Cologne, Werder Bremen, Armenia Bielefeld, and Karlsruher SC.
After retiring as a player, Labbadia transitioned into coaching, where he managed several high-profile teams, such as Hertha Berlin, VfB Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg, Hamburger SV, and Bayer Leverkusen.
As a coach, he has led teams such as Hertha Berlin, VfB Stuttgart, and Bayer Leverkusen. He is the sixth German to manage the Super Eagles.
Labbadia’s first challenge will be overseeing the Super Eagles in two crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic on September 7 in Uyo and Rwanda on September 10 in Kigali. He takes over from Finidi George, the previous coach.
