Pop superstar Mariah Carey has shared the tragic passage of her mother, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Alison Carey, on the same day.
The singer expressed her grief and requested privacy during this difficult time.
Carey, known for her powerful voice and numerous hits, took to social media to announce the deaths of her mother and sister. The news was first reported by People Magazine.
Carey’s mother, Patricia, was an opera singer and was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey, Mariah’s father. The couple divorced when Mariah was just three years old.
In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer opened up about her complicated relationships with her mother and sister.
She described a relationship with her mother filled with pride, pain, and mixed emotions. Carey wrote, “Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”
Carey also discussed her strained relationship with her sister, Alison, mentioning that it was safer for her not to have contact with her for a period.
Despite their difficulties, Mariah and her mother were able to reconnect and even worked together on a Christmas album duet in 2010.
Carey said, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.
“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
Patricia, was known for her career as an opera singer, and her father, Alfred Roy Carey, had a brief marriage with Patricia before their separation.
