French authorities have indicted Pavel Durov, the CEO of the popular messaging app Telegram, on six serious charges. This development has sparked considerable controversy and concern, both in France and internationally.

Durov was released from custody on a €5 million bail and is currently prohibited from leaving France, with a requirement to check in at a police station twice a week.

Durov, who was detained at Paris’ Le Bourget airport on Saturday night, faces several grave charges. According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, these include:

  • Complicity in crimes related to child pornography: This involves making available programs or data that facilitate the distribution of illegal content.
  • Complicity in web-mastering illegal transactions: This pertains to enabling transactions on platforms used by organized groups for illegal activities.
  • Refusal to cooperate with authorities: Durov is accused of not providing necessary information or documents for legal investigations.

These charges are part of a broader investigation into criminal activities allegedly facilitated through Telegram, which is known for its encrypted messaging services.

Telegram has been under scrutiny for accusations related to fraud, drug trafficking, organized crime, terrorism promotion, and cyberbullying.

In response to Durov’s arrest, Telegram has strongly denied any wrongdoing. The company issued a statement asserting that it complies with all EU laws and that Durov has “nothing to hide.” Telegram’s statement was a defense against the allegations that the platform has been used for illegal activities.

French President Emmanuel Macron has addressed the situation, emphasizing that the arrest is not politically motivated. Macron reassured both French citizens and the international community that France remains committed to upholding fundamental rights and freedoms within the legal framework.

“I have seen false information regarding France following the arrest of Pavel Durov,” Macron stated. “France is deeply committed to freedom of expression and communication, to innovation, and to the spirit of entrepreneurship. It will remain so.”

Macron emphasized that the arrest was part of an ongoing judicial investigation and not a result of any political agenda.

“In a state governed by the rule of law, freedoms are upheld within a legal framework, both on social media and in real life, to protect citizens and respect their fundamental rights. It is up to the judiciary, in full independence, to enforce the law,” he added.
