Navy Buries Heroic Officer Who Died Saving 59 Oil Workers

Lieutenant Commander Gideon Gwaza, a dedicated officer of the Nigerian Navy, was buried with full military honours on Wednesday at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja.

Gwaza, who served as the Base Operations Officer at the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base in Bonny, lost his life during a daring rescue operation in Rivers State.

Gwaza’s final mission took place on July 30, 2024, when he and his team responded to an emergency involving the MV AMBIKA 4, a vessel that was on the verge of sinking at the Okpobo Field near the Okpobo River.

The operation, though successful in rescuing 59 individuals from the stricken vessel, tragically claimed Gwaza’s life.

The incident was detailed in a statement by the Director of Naval Information, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, on Friday in Abuja.

According to the statement, the Navy received a distress call from the vessel on the night of July 29, 2024.

In response, a rescue team comprising 10 armed personnel in two Interceptor Boats, led by Lieutenant Commander Gwaza, was dispatched to the scene.

In a statement following the rescue, the Nigerian Navy praised Gwaza’s bravery and commitment. His efforts not only saved lives but also highlighted the critical role of the Navy in safeguarding maritime operations and responding to emergencies.

The funeral service for Lieutenant Commander Gwaza was attended by top military officials, colleagues, and family members. The ceremony was marked by solemn tributes and expressions of gratitude for his service and sacrifice.

The Chief of Naval Staff, in his eulogy, described Gwaza as a dedicated officer whose courage and leadership were exemplary. “Lieutenant Commander Gwaza’s heroism and dedication were evident in the way he conducted himself during the rescue operation,” he said.

“His sacrifice will not be forgotten, and his legacy will inspire future generations of naval officers.”

Gwaza’s career with the Nigerian Navy was distinguished by his commitment to duty and his leadership in various operations.

As the Base Operations Officer in Bonny, he was responsible for overseeing the operational readiness of the base and coordinating naval activities in the region.
