The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has strongly rejected recent calls for the Nigerian military to intervene in the government, asserting the Army’s firm commitment to protecting the nation’s democratic system.

Addressing these concerns at the opening ceremony of the COAS Combined 2nd and 3rd Quarters Conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Lagbaja emphasized that the military would not allow itself to be used as a tool for undemocratic interests.

In his speech, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja made it clear that the Nigerian Army would not entertain any suggestions or attempts to undermine the country’s democracy.

His comments were a response to increasing calls from certain segments of the population, particularly among younger Nigerians, who have not experienced the years of military rule in Nigeria and might not fully understand the dangers it posed.

“The Nigerian Army will not allow itself to be used to undemocratically sail some interests to power,” Lagbaja stated. “As the Service that received the most image bashing as a fallout of previous military interventions in Nigeria, the Nigerian Army is not poised to losing the new prestige it has painstakingly built in the past 25 years.”

This declaration comes at a time when Nigeria faces numerous socio-economic challenges, prompting some to question the effectiveness of the current government. However, Lagbaja reassured Nigerians that the military would uphold the principles of democracy, which have been hard-earned through years of collective struggle.

During the conference, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja also highlighted the ongoing modernization efforts within the Nigerian Army. Among the recent advancements is the acquisition of two BELL UH-1 Huey helicopters.

“This acquisition is part of our continuous efforts to modernize the Nigerian Army and improve our operational capabilities,” Lagbaja explained. “We are committed to ensuring that our troops are well-equipped to meet the security challenges facing our nation.”

Moreover, the Army Chief addressed the welfare of the families of fallen soldiers, emphasizing the Army’s ongoing commitment to supporting widows and other dependents of those who have sacrificed their lives for the nation.

“The welfare of widows and family members of fallen heroes remains on course,” he assured. This focus on welfare underscores the Army’s dedication not just to national security but also to the well-being of those who have served.

The nationwide hunger protest that recently took place was also a significant topic at the conference. Lt. Gen. Lagbaja acknowledged that the protest was a clear sign of the growing concern over food security in Nigeria. He emphasized that food security is deeply connected to national security and that the Army is fully aware of the potential for such issues to escalate into broader security challenges.

“Though the situation that led to the protest seemed to have settled, the Nigerian Army understands that food security was among the factors that led to the protest,” he noted.

To address these concerns, the Army plans to enhance its agricultural initiatives, particularly through the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches Limited. The goal is to increase crop production and release grains into the market at subsidized rates, supporting government efforts to tackle the food crisis.

“The Nigerian Army will, in the coming days, review its agricultural policy to better position the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches Limited to significantly boost crop production,” Lagbaja announced.

Beyond food security, the Army Chief also spoke about efforts to bolster the Nigerian Army’s combat capabilities. The recent acquisition of new equipment, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, rifles, and ammunition, is part of the Army’s strategy to improve its operations across the country.

“These new acquisitions will enhance our operational readiness and ensure that we are better equipped to handle security challenges,” Lagbaja said.

The event in Uyo also saw strong support from the local government. The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, praised the Army Chief for his leadership and the direction in which he has taken the Nigerian Army. Governor Eno assured the Army of the state government’s full support, particularly in the establishment of a proposed Army base in Akwa Ibom.

“We are pleased that the conference is being held in Akwa Ibom,” Governor Eno remarked. “We commend the COAS for the purposeful direction he has given to the Nigerian Army towards meeting its constitutional responsibility.”
