The highly anticipated transfer of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen to Chelsea has collapsed, leaving football fans and pundits alike in disbelief as the summer transfer window draws to a close.
Reports emerged on Saturday, deadline day, that the move, which seemed imminent, fell through at the last moment.
Osimhen, who has been a key player for SSC Napoli, was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge throughout the summer.
Chelsea, under the management of Enzo Maresca, had been eager to strengthen their attacking options and saw the 25-year-old Nigerian as a prime candidate.
However, despite intense discussions and negotiations, the deal could not be finalised. However, there are speculations that the Saudi side, Al Ahli, may notch the Super Eagles star before Monday.
According to reports, including those from Fabrice Hawkins and French newspaper RMC Sport, the crux of the issue lay in the financial demands and the agreement between the two clubs.
Osimhen reportedly sought a weekly wage exceeding £300,000, a significant figure that complicated the negotiations.
Chelsea’s attempts to meet these demands or find a workable compromise were ultimately unsuccessful.
“Victor Osimhen will remain at Napoli unless a substantial offer comes in from Saudi Arabia before Monday,” Hawkins stated.
This news leaves Chelsea’s plans for a new striker in disarray as they move into the new season.
Victor Osimhen’s transfer saga has been one of the most talked-about topics in European football this summer.
The Nigerian international has been in stellar form, contributing significantly to Napoli’s successes in Serie A.
His impressive performances, including being named African Footballer of the Year and finishing eighth in the Ballon d’Or rankings, have made him a sought-after player.
Chelsea, who finished mid-table in the Premier League last season, have been active in the transfer market, looking to strengthen their squad.
The arrival of Osimhen was seen as a critical move to boost their attacking prowess. However, the inability to secure his signature could pose challenges for Chelsea’s ambitions this season.
The breakdown of the transfer has been met with a statement from Osimhen’s agent, Roberto Calenda, who emphasized that the striker remains committed to Napoli.
“Osimhen is a Napoli player, with a contract recently renewed with mutual satisfaction,” Calenda said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“He made history and when there were major offers we always accepted the club’s decisions. Victor was elected African Footballer of the Year and he still has so much to do in Europe. There needs to be respect and balance.”
