Transfer Crisis: Ighalo Disappointed By Nigerians’ Comment on Osimhen

Former Nigerian international footballer Odion Ighalo has voiced his disappointment over the negative comments directed at Victor Osimhen by some Nigerians.

The 2023 CAF Player of the Year has been facing criticism following his exclusion from Napoli’s first-team squad and a botched transfer to Chelsea, decisions that have stirred controversy among fans and commentators.

Ighalo, who spoke out on social media, expressed his sadness at the treatment Osimhen has received.

“No human being is perfect, and we have all made mistakes in life,” Ighalo said. “But seeing comments about this young man from his own country people makes me really sad, without even knowing what happened.

“I spoke to him, and I can feel the pain in his voice. The way he’s been treated, this young man plays with heart and pain for his country.”

Osimhen’s recent troubles began with his failed move to Chelsea. The transfer was expected to be finalised on the deadline day, but it fell through due to disagreements over salary expectations.

Since then, Osimhen has not been part of Napoli’s senior team, which has led to speculation about his future and prompted mixed reactions from fans.

Napoli’s decision to sideline Osimhen was further complicated by the club’s acquisition of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.

Lukaku took over Osimhen’s former number 9 jersey, intensifying the scrutiny on Osimhen’s situation.

Napoli’s Sporting Director, Giovanni Manna, has defended the club’s decision, emphasising that the team has made investments in new players and is sticking to their approach.

“We’ve made significant investments; we brought in Lukaku and kept Raspadori and Simeone, which wasn’t guaranteed,” Manna said in an interview.

“Right now, we are sticking to our consistent approach that we’ve had from the start. Victor has expressed his desire not to play for Napoli, and we have made other choices.”

Ighalo reassured fans and the public that Osimhen’s current struggles are part of the journey every player experiences.

“Hmm, it’s well,” Ighalo added. “He will definitely be back stronger. We learn every day in life. Happy New Month to y’all.”
