Dr. Doyin Okupe, former Director-General of Peter Obi’s Presidential Campaign Organization, has shed light on his decision to part ways with Obi and the Labour Party (LP) and support President Bola Tinubu.
Okupe’s explanation comes amid widespread criticism and confusion regarding his political shift.
Okupe, who left the Labour Party in January 2024, cited ideological differences as the main reason for his exit.
These differences, he explained, emerged after the 2023 elections.
Despite his departure from the party, Okupe has maintained that his initial support for Obi was based on principles of fairness and justice rather than personal or political gain.
“I supported Peter Obi because I believed that the presidency should go to a southerner, and preferably an Igbo man, in the interest of equity,” Okupe stated.
He also emphasized that his political alignment with Obi concluded with the Supreme Court’s judgment on the election, which ultimately did not favor Obi.
Following his departure from the party, Okupe has expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu. In his Monday statement, Okupe praised Tinubu for his political acumen and administrative competence.
He urged Nigerians to support the current administration for the stability and well-being of the country.
“I have been involved in Nigerian politics for 46 years, and at this point, I am not affiliated with any political party. However, I support President Tinubu and his administration,” Okupe stated. He emphasized his commitment to Nigeria’s progress, regardless of political or religious affiliations.
Okupe’s shift in political support has not been without backlash. Many Nigerians have criticized him on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), for endorsing some of Tinubu’s policies.
In response, Okupe has dismissed his critics as “political urchins” who lack a comprehensive understanding of Nigeria’s political landscape.
“It is regrettable that many young Nigerians who abuse and insult me know little about the country’s political history,” Okupe remarked.
He urged citizens to unite and focus on the nation’s progress rather than engage in divisive and petty criticisms.
Okupe further stressed the importance of constructive criticism and patience in a democratic society.
“After elections, we must shield our swords, criticize government constructively, and wait patiently for the next election. That is the essence of true democracy,” he said.
### Political and Personal Commitments
Okupe also addressed claims that he was financially compensated by Tinubu or his allies.
He clarified that he did not receive any financial benefits from Tinubu and instead relied on personal funds and support from a mutual friend.
Okupe expressed his willingness to serve as an elder statesman and private adviser to the president, rather than seek any formal political position.
“I agreed with Obi that I would not serve in his government if he won the presidency. My support was unconditional and driven by personal conviction rather than personal gain,” Okupe added.
