President Bola Tinubu has called for the immediate evacuation of residents from areas affected by severe flooding in Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State.
The floods have caused significant damage, with thousands displaced and critical infrastructure affected.
A statement from Tinubu’s aide, Bayo Onanuga, highlighted the severity of the disaster.
The floods were triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam, which has submerged several houses, roads, and official buildings.
President Tinubu has expressed deep concern and extended his condolences to the people of Borno State.
“The worst flood in recent decades has displaced thousands of residents and affected vital facilities,” the statement said.
Tinubu assured Governor Babagana Zulum that the Federal Government is prepared to assist with the immediate humanitarian needs of the affected population.
He has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide aid to flood victims.
“The President remains committed to mobilizing federal resources to support the state during this challenging time,” the statement continued.
Residents of Maiduguri confirmed that the floodwaters have severely impacted daily life.
Some have reported that houses, roads, and even the Emir’s palace have been submerged.
The flooding has also disrupted economic activities in the state.
Schools, markets, and workplaces have been closed, and many farms have been destroyed.
The disaster has raised questions about the state government’s preparedness.
Earlier, Borno State officials had assured residents that measures were in place to prevent flooding.
However, the assurance did not prevent the disaster, leading to criticism of the state’s response.
The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Bukar Tijani, had previously inspected the Alau Dam.
He assured residents that the dam was secure and that there was no risk of flooding.
“We have been to Alau Dam on behalf of Governor Babagana Zulum. We have discussed and seen what to do,” Tijani said.
Despite these assurances, the flood has had a devastating impact on Maiduguri.
