The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has given a vote of confidence to two key ministers in President Bola Tinubu’s administration: the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike. This comes as reports of a potential cabinet reshuffle surface, with President Tinubu expected to make adjustments in the coming weeks.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in a statement issued on Sunday, highlighted the contributions of both ministers and called for their retention in the cabinet. The group also requested that the President increase ministerial representation from the Southeast region to better reflect the nation’s diversity and ensure that the Southeast contributes to Nigeria’s development.

A Vote of Confidence in Umahi and Wike

In its statement, signed by Ohanaeze’s factional Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group praised the performance of Senator David Umahi and Barrister Nyesom Wike, citing their achievements in their respective portfolios since their appointments.

Ohanaeze noted that Senator Umahi has demonstrated exceptional leadership in his role as Minister of Works, spearheading President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Infrastructure Revolution.” This initiative is focused on improving Nigeria’s road networks and other infrastructural projects. According to Ohanaeze, Umahi’s work will lead to long-lasting improvements that will benefit all Nigerians.

“We are particularly encouraged by Senator Umahi’s commitment to infrastructural development,” the statement read. “By 2027, we expect Nigerians to witness a remarkable improvement in our road networks, thanks to his visionary leadership.”

Similarly, Barrister Nyesom Wike, who oversees the Federal Capital Territory, was lauded for his innovative and transformational work in Abuja. Ohanaeze highlighted Wike’s efforts to bring positive changes to the capital city, noting that his leadership has already led to significant improvements.

“We acknowledge Wike’s exceptional contributions to the FCT, where his initiatives reflect the ingenuity and creativity that the Igbo are known for,” Ohanaeze stated.

 Igbo Representation in Tinubu’s Cabinet

Beyond praising Umahi and Wike, Ohanaeze used the opportunity to advocate for more ministerial positions for the Southeast region. The organization argued that the Southeast has a wealth of skilled professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s development and called on President Tinubu to harness the talents of these individuals.

“We appeal to President Tinubu to expand ministerial representation from the Southeast,” Isiguzoro said. “There are many competent Igbo professionals who can drive positive change and effectively implement policies that align with the President’s vision for Nigeria.”

Ohanaeze argued that increased representation from the Southeast would not only boost the region’s contribution to national development but also foster greater unity and inclusivity across the country. By appointing more ministers from the Southeast, the organization believes that the federal government can strengthen collaboration and build a more equitable system of governance.

Umahi and Wike’s Impact on Nigeria’s Development

The endorsement of Senator David Umahi and Barrister Nyesom Wike is rooted in the significant work they have done since joining President Tinubu’s cabinet.

Umahi, a former governor of Ebonyi State, was appointed Minister of Works in 2023. Since then, he has focused on addressing Nigeria’s infrastructure challenges, particularly in the area of road construction and maintenance. Under Umahi’s leadership, the Ministry of Works has embarked on several critical projects aimed at improving the country’s transportation networks, which are essential for economic growth and national unity.

In particular, Ohanaeze praised Umahi for his efforts to ensure that the Southeast region benefits from federal infrastructure projects. The organization noted that these projects have the potential to uplift the region and contribute to its long-term development.

“We believe that Umahi’s work in the Southeast will lead to tangible improvements in the region’s infrastructure, and this will have a positive impact on the lives of our people,” the statement said.

Similarly, Barrister Nyesom Wike, who was appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in 2023, has been credited with revitalizing the capital city through his leadership. As a former governor of Rivers State, Wike brought his experience in governance to his new role, implementing projects aimed at improving the quality of life for residents of Abuja.

Ohanaeze noted that Wike’s work in the FCT has already begun to yield results, with visible improvements in infrastructure, urban planning, and service delivery. The group believes that Wike’s continued leadership in the FCT will further enhance the city’s development and make it a model for other parts of the country.

Ohanaeze’s Appeal for Unity and Development

In its statement, Ohanaeze Ndigbo also touched on the broader implications of its support for Umahi and Wike. The group emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration between the Southeast region and the federal government, particularly in the context of Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges.

The organization expressed optimism about the recent bilateral agreements between Nigeria and China, signed during President Tinubu’s diplomatic visit to China. These agreements, which focus on infrastructure development, trade, and technology transfer, have the potential to boost Nigeria’s economy and improve the living standards of its citizens.

“We regard these agreements as bold, pragmatic measures that will enhance the welfare of Nigerians,” Ohanaeze said. “If fully implemented, they will bolster our economy and cement President Tinubu’s legacy as a transformative leader.”

Ohanaeze believes that the Southeast can play a vital role in realizing these goals and called on the federal government to empower the region through additional ministerial appointments. By doing so, the organization argued, the government would tap into the region’s “unparalleled ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness” to drive Nigeria’s development forward.
