In a statement released on Tuesday, Richard Mills, the US ambassador to Nigeria, commended the peaceful atmosphere during the elections.

“The U.S. Mission in Nigeria commends the people of Edo State for the widely peaceful conduct of gubernatorial elections on September 21,” Mills said.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining calm following the announcement of results, reflecting a commitment to democratic values.

Mills further stated, “Transparency and due process are crucial to maintaining public confidence in any democratic system.”

Mills highlighted the role of political leaders in promoting peace.

He noted Governor Godwin Obaseki’s appeal for calm and urged all stakeholders to support established electoral processes.

“Stakeholders, including INEC, should respect legal procedures to challenge results if necessary,” he added.

This statement underscores the importance of upholding democratic principles, especially in a politically vibrant state like Edo.

Edo State has a history of politically charged elections, with past polls marked by violence and disputes.

However, the peaceful conduct of this election marks a significant step forward for democracy in the region.
