Philip Shaibu, the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, has called on outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki to obey a recent court ruling regarding his reinstatement.
Shaibu made this call in a statement released by his media team following a Federal High Court decision.
The court dismissed an application by the Edo State government and the House of Assembly to delay Shaibu’s reinstatement.
Justice James Omotosho presided over this landmark ruling in Abuja.
Shaibu described the court’s decision as a strong affirmation of justice and democracy.
“It is time to put the interests of Edo State above personal agendas,” he said.
He emphasized the need for Obaseki to respect the rule of law.
The court ruled that Shaibu’s impeachment was illegal and unconstitutional.
It cited violations of sections 188 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution.
In a press statement, Shaibu’s media team celebrated the court’s judgment.
They welcomed the decision as a victory for democracy.
“This judgment protects citizens’ rights and upholds the integrity of the judiciary,” the statement read.
Shaibu urged Obaseki to take the path of honor by complying with the ruling.
He listed specific actions the governor should take immediately.
“First, Governor Obaseki must restore Comrade Shaibu’s salaries and allowances,” he stated.
“Second, he should respect the office of the Deputy Governor and allow Shaibu to perform his duties without interference.”
Shaibu also called for the governor to pay a fine of N200,000 awarded against each appellant.
This fine was given for wasting the court’s time during the legal proceedings.
He praised Justice Omotosho for his courageous ruling.
“I commend the judge for standing firm in the face of pressure,” Shaibu said.
He also thanked the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for restoring Shaibu’s security detail as directed by the court.
The media team expressed gratitude to those who supported Shaibu throughout this ordeal.
“We thank all lovers of democracy for standing with Comrade Shaibu,” they said.
The ruling has sparked significant reactions among Edo residents.
The situation poses a critical test for Obaseki’s administration.
It raises questions about his respect for the judiciary and the rule of law.
Shaibu remains determined to reclaim his position as Deputy Governor.
“Justice has prevailed, and I will not back down,” he declared.
The next steps will be crucial in determining the future of governance in Edo State.
Shaibu’s team remains optimistic about the outcome.
“We will continue to fight for what is right,” they stated.
