The Edo State Government has raised serious concerns about an alleged plan by Comrade Philip Shaibu, the reinstated deputy governor, to invade the Edo State Government House on Monday.
In a statement released late Saturday, Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser to the Edo State Government, urged the Inspector General of Police and concerned citizens to intervene and prevent what he described as a “devious plot” by Shaibu.
Osagie warned that this planned action could lead to chaos, referencing a tragic incident where a police officer was killed during a previous attempt by Shaibu to assert his position. “The last time Shaibu attempted to do this, it led to the death of a police officer. We believe that is one death too many,” he said.
The government’s statement emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in the state. “We want to draw the attention of the Inspector General of Police to the intelligence we have gathered regarding this planned move by Comrade Shaibu,” Osagie stated.
Attempts to reach Shaibu on Saturday night were unsuccessful. His mobile phones were either switched off or unreachable.
The controversy surrounding Shaibu’s position has been ongoing, creating tension within the state’s political landscape. The conflict stems from a ruling that has been met with legal challenges and accusations of misconduct.
Osagie further explained that the government has written to the Inspector General of Police and other stakeholders. This communication urges that all actions regarding the enforcement of Justice Omotosho’s ruling be stayed until the Court of Appeal has heard the case.
He emphasized that allowing Shaibu to act on the ruling while the appeal is pending would create a “situation of helplessness” for the Court of Appeal. “It is crucial that we prevent any actions that could lead to a breach of peace or a breakdown of law and order in Benin City and Edo State,” Osagie added.
The political climate in Edo State is currently fraught with uncertainty. Shaibu’s alleged plans have stirred fears of potential unrest, and the government is on high alert.
The history of political tensions in Edo State has often been marked by confrontations and unrest. Previous incidents have shown how quickly situations can escalate, resulting in violence and casualties.
Political analysts have pointed out that this latest development could significantly affect the state’s governance and political stability. The situation highlights the ongoing struggle for power and influence within the state’s political arena.
As the planned date approaches, all eyes are on the government and security agencies to ensure that order is maintained. The Edo State Government has called for calm and urged citizens not to panic.
“Let’s work together to ensure that peace prevails,” Osagie said.
