Former Vice President of Nigeria and 2023 Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has voiced his strong support for the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State. He described the elections as a crucial step in strengthening constitutional democracy and upholding the rule of law.
In a post on his verified X (formerly known as Twitter) account, Atiku lauded the efforts of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who has pushed ahead with plans to hold the elections despite challenges.
Atiku praised the scheduled elections, calling them a “beacon of hope” for Nigeria’s democracy. He expressed his belief that local government elections play a critical role in ensuring that power is distributed and exercised at the grassroots level, which he sees as essential to sustaining the democratic process.
“The local government elections in Rivers State tomorrow stand as a beacon of hope, offering renewed vigour to constitutional democracy at the very core of governance,” Atiku wrote in his post.
He emphasized that the elections offer an opportunity to strengthen local government autonomy, in line with a Supreme Court ruling that affirms the independence of local governments in the country. According to Atiku, these elections are not just about filling positions but about re-establishing the core principles that form the foundation of the Nigerian republic.
“These elections present an opportunity to uphold the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy, breathing life into the foundational principles of our republic,” he added.
Atiku stressed the importance of constitutionalism and the rule of law, key pillars of any democratic society. He believes that the local government elections in Rivers State will reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to these principles, which have often come under threat in various parts of the country.
“Undoubtedly, this election resounds as a powerful affirmation of constitutionalism and the rule of law, a cause that should rally the support of all true champions of democracy,” Atiku stated.
His remarks come at a time when the autonomy of local governments across Nigeria has been a subject of intense debate. Despite a 2019 Supreme Court ruling which upheld the independence of local governments, many state governments have been accused of undermining their authority.
In his statement, Atiku urged the people of Rivers State to take part in the election process. He emphasized the importance of peaceful participation and encouraged voters to carry out their civic duties responsibly. According to Atiku, free and fair elections are essential for any democracy to thrive.
“It is a call to every believer in the democratic process to stand firm in defence of the people’s right to choose their leaders freely and fairly,” he said.
He commended Governor Fubara for his leadership and for ensuring that the elections would be held, despite the challenges faced. The former Vice President praised the governor’s courage, noting that local government elections are a vital part of Nigeria’s political landscape.
“I commend Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his courageous leadership in ensuring local government elections are held in Rivers State,” Atiku said.
