Northern Governors Rally Against Tax Reform Bill

Share

The Northern Governors Forum has voiced strong opposition to the proposed Tax Reform Bill recently submitted to the National Assembly.

The governors assert that the bill undermines the interests of the Northern region and other sub-national entities in Nigeria.

In a communiqué read by Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the forum expressed their discontent over the proposed changes to the distribution of Value Added Tax (VAT).

The governors were particularly critical of the suggested shift to a derivation-based model for VAT distribution.

“This amendment goes against the interests of the North and other sub-nationals,” Yahaya stated firmly.

The forum’s response highlights a growing concern among northern governors about policies they believe could adversely affect their states’ economic well-being.

In their statement, the governors emphasized their disappointment with the contents of the Tax Reform Bill.

“It is alarming that such a proposal has reached the National Assembly,” they noted.

The proposed bill is seen as a threat to the equitable distribution of resources, which many believe is vital for maintaining stability across the nation.

One significant issue raised by the governors is the method by which companies remit VAT.

They pointed out that companies typically pay VAT based on the location of their headquarters and tax offices, rather than where goods and services are consumed.

This could lead to further imbalances in revenue distribution, particularly impacting northern states.

The governors unanimously rejected the proposed tax amendments, urging members of the National Assembly to oppose any bill that might jeopardize the welfare of their people.

“We call on the National Assembly to listen to our concerns and act in the best interests of all Nigerians,” they stated.

The Northern Governors Forum also stressed the need for fairness and equity in implementing all Federal Government programs and policies.
